Al Kharid Fishing Spot

Fly fishing is mostly used to fish for trout and salmon, which are commonly used for low level food in F2P.

But fly fishing also provides some really great early game experience from levels 27 – 58, where experience can range from 35k to 45k per hour!

This makes fly fishing the fastest method of getting level 99 fishing in OSRS, as well as one of the faster P2P fishing methods.

So where are the best places to set up your rod and catch some trout or salmon?

You’ll find this little spot as you leave the castle by the area infested with goblins.

There’s a river right there where you can catch some trout and salmon. This spot is great for entry level players, as you can easily cook the fish by lighting a fire or using the Lumbridge cooking range.

The range in Lumbridge also decreases the chance of burning your fish, so this spot is extra sweet.

But overall, it’s just a solid way for new players to train multiple skills close to one location.

You could even use the fish for cooking and fishing experience, and then eat the fish during combat.

Where to Find: Just between Lumbridge and the gate to Al Kharid, you will see a small river you can fish in.

I would recommend this spot only to ultimate ironmen, or ironmen who are low level and need food to traverse the area – as there are many traps which can badly injure you.

This is also a decent location for lower levels to also fish when doing elf slayer tasks at the Elf Camp, since there’s an eternal fire you can cook your fish on.

This used to be a very popular area for fly fishing, although some other spots have overtaken it.

A bank is fairly close by, meaning lower levels can bank their fish to cook or sell later.

I would recommend this to low level players who are new to the area and not ready to leave, since it can be difficult to get here without teleports unlocked.

The Gnome Stronghold offers a variety of training options too, such as combat, agility, farming, and fishing.

Where to Find: Near the Terrorbird cage and Brimstal’s Cave in the south-western corner of the Stronghold.

It’s along the River Lum just beneath Barbarian Village, and is the closest spot to a bank (Edgeville bank).

This is also popular because there’s an eternal fire place right next to the fishing spot. This leads to many players who are power fishing, where they’ll fish, cook, and then drop their fish to start over.

Many players who are strictly F2P will even use this spot to go from level 20 to 99 fishing!

When you’re starting off here, expect experience of around 20k per hour. This will increase to about 50k per hour once you’re a higher fishing level.

Where to Find: Just south of Barbarian Village, along the River Lum which is near the bridge connecting Barbarian Village.

Using tick manipulation, players can get 55k – 65k experience an hour right here. Which is very high for fishing, and it’s only beaten by Barbarian fishing!

If you do not wish to tick manipulate, then expect between 35k – 50k experience per hour, dependant on your fishing level.

It’s generally not advised to use a bank for this. But if you must, then Shilo Village is the closest fly fishing spot to a bank, making it a great option for that as well!

The only account build where banking these fish makes sense, should be low leveled ironmen who need the fish for training/cooking experience. Otherwise it’s better to get the XP and keep going.

Members can also use Stripy Feathers for rainbow fish here, and these offer more experience, but are slower to catch overall – and are therefore not recommended for grinding.

To gain access to Shilo Village you must first complete the quest “Shilo Village”, which is fairly long and challenging for lower leveled accounts.

Where to Find: Just north of the bank and furnace, in the river that runs through the town.

Fly fishing rods and feathers

Fly fishing rods are also required for mid level fishing. These rods can only be used in rivers. Along with a fly fishing rod, players also need feathers. They can be bought from the Shilo Village and Port Sarim fishing shop, but are also dropped by chickens. When a player has found a fishing spot, they can then use their fly fishing rod if the option “lure fishing spot” is available.

Stripy feathers (introduced with the Hunter skill) can be used for fly fishing, as well. Those feathers work the same as normal feathers, but players will only be able to fish rainbow fish, rather than the usual trout and salmon.

Harpoons are required for mid and high level fish. Harpoons can only be used in the seas. When a player has found a fishing spot, they can then use their harpoon if the option “harpoon fishing spot” is available.

There are four types of harpoons – the regular harpoon, the barb-tail harpoon, the Dragon harpoon and the Infernal harpoon. All harpoons catch fish at exactly the same rate except the dragon harpoon which has a 20% faster catch rate. The barb-tail harpoon, dragon harpoon and infernal harpoon can all be wielded. Many players prefer these harpoons as it saves an inventory space.

After being taught by Otto Godblessed, a player can catch fish that are harpoonable with absolutely nothing but their hands. Levels are higher and also require a Strength level, but fish are caught a bit faster and it saves an inventory space.

Lobsters are caught in the sea by using lobster pots. When a player has found a fishing spot, they can then use their lobster pot if the option “cage fishing spot” is available.

Members with a level 48 in Fishing can speak with Otto Godblessed in his home near Baxtorian Falls to learn special barbarian methods of fishing. First, he instructs the player on heavy rod fishing. Heavy rod fishing requires a barbarian rod (found under Ottos bed) and any type of bait (except for stripy/coloured feathers), as well as a knife to gut the fish. In order to catch the special fish in Ottos lake, a Strength and Agility level is needed in addition to the fishing requirement. The leaping fish obtained can be used with a knife to obtain roe and caviar for use in the Herblore skill, and catching them gives small amounts of experience in Strength and Agility. The fish you catch this way are as follows:

Fish Levels required Experience gained
Leaping trout 48 15 15 50 5 5
Leaping salmon 58 30 30 70 6 6
Leaping sturgeon 70 45 45 80 7 7

After this, the player can learn how to fish tuna, swordfish, and sharks without a harpoon. Using this method requires a higher Fishing level as well as a Strength level equivalent to the Fishing level needed to catch the fish normally. However, it provides small amounts of Strength experience.

Fish Levels required Experience gained
Tuna 55 35 80 8
Swordfish 70 50 100 10
Shark 96 76 110 11

Players can catch fish with nets at these spots:

There are several different types of fishing spots in RuneScape. The most common types are Net/Bait, Lure/Bait, Cage/Harpoon, and Net/Harpoon. Most fishing spots take a minimum of 280 ticks (around 3 minutes) to move, and a maximum of 530 ticks (around 5 minutes). However, some fishing spots such as those for Karambwan and Frogspawn never move, and Anglerfish fishing spots last longer than most other spots.

This used to be a very popular area for fly fishing, although some other spots have overtaken it.
