Did Subway Get Rid Of Oven Roasted Chicken

As far as fast food dining options go, one might assume that a Subway Oven Roasted Chicken sandwich is a relatively healthy pick. According to Insider, its one of the healthiest choices on the menu, and Subway itself categorizes the sandwich as one of their Fresh Fit™ options, which means that a six-inch sub clocks in at under 400 calories (via Subway). Its also a go-to option for many who are looking to eat healthy, including registered dietitian Jim White, who suggests adding a bit of extra flavor with Dijon mustard (via Eat This, Not That).

Subway took matters into their own hands and sent the protein to be tested by two independent labs, providing the actual lab results for concerned chicken-loving customers to peruse (via Subway). Their results were dramatically different, with add-ins like dried soy protein and spices only making up 1 percent or less of the chicken.

Whether its 100 percent real chicken or not, it still might not be the best choice on the menu – Fast Food Geek gave the sandwich a measly 1 out of 5 rating, and Thrillist found the meat uninspiring, saying that it “doesnt taste like much of anything.”

The remainder of the content in the protein source was soy protein, the investigation found. However, Subway took issue with their findings and filed a $210 million defamation lawsuit, as CBC reported, criticizing the testing methods and interpretation of the results. According to Vice, just two months later, The Ontario Supreme Court threw the lawsuit out, claiming the report was protected under an anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) statute.

However, the main protein component of the sandwich might not be exactly what youre anticipating. CBC Marketplace undertook an investigation in which they tested chicken from five major fast food chains, including Subway — and the results were concerning. A DNA researcher tested the Oven Roasted Chicken sandwich, and found it only contained 53.6 percent chicken DNA (via CBC Marketplace).

Some tweets are from Subway employees (or so they claim to be) and suggest that the meat price is too high to purchase at the moment. We’re not sure what the reason is, exactly, but if Subway wants to keep customers happy and coming back, they need to think of another, better promotion.

At present, Subway has 15 sandwiches on its menu along with 15 “Signature Wraps,” though some of the menu items are temporary, such as the Bacon Tatum sandwich, named for NBA star Jason Tatum, according to Chew Boom.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

When fast-food chain Subway decided to remove the rotisserie chicken sandwich and the roast beef sandwich from its menu last year, customers and even operators were baffled by the decision. According to some employees, the rotisserie chicken sandwich was, in fact, one of the chains top-selling items, so the decision to discontinue it while keeping some less popular items on the menu seemed odd.

While the roast beef and rotisserie chicken sandwiches are the favorites of many, neither tops the list of the best Subway sandwiches on any of more than half a dozen reviews surveyed for this article. A ranking of Subway sandwiches by Mashed declared the Spicy Italian “the best sandwich sold at Subway.” Thrillist and Time Out also called the Spicy Italian sandwich the best one on offer, while Urban Matter chose the classic Turkey Breast as their top pick.

The sandwiches were removed from menus in June, and while an official reason was never given for the move, the fact that rotisserie chicken and roast beef were two of the most expensive proteins on Subways menu may have had something to do with it, according to Business Insider.
