Does Ge Make Water Heaters Anymore

So, you are all set to buy your new water heating appliance or maybe an air conditioner, and you are looking for the best brand in the market. If you have started with your research, we are sure that you came across the brands G.E and Rheem and some more like Trane.

Now, many people have this question of whether G.E. owns Rheem or not. If you have the same question, then continue reading to find out.

Coming straight to the question without beating around the bush, G.E. does not own Rheem. Rheem is owned by a Japanese company named Paloma, one of the leading water heater manufacturers with its original headquarters in Nagoya, Japan, and its North American headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.

It was founded in 1925 by two brothers names Richard R.S. Rheem and Donald D.L Rheem. The company started manufacturing and supplying quality packaging to the petroleum industry and only got into selling heating appliances once it started manufacturing boilers and tanks post their acquisition of Republic steel package company.

It is now among the top 5 HVAC manufacturers from domestic and commercial use, with tons of good reviews from its loyal customer base.

Speaking of G.E., it is the General Company’s abbreviation, an American multinational company in the market for more than 125 years now. It offers a service like the brand Rheem.

In fact. their work is way more diverse than Rheem. G.E itself is owned by Haier, a well-known Chinese brand that deals with quality electronic appliances for domestic and commercial use, just like Rheem.

So, to sum it up, Rheem and G.E. are separate brands. Both provide quality electronic appliances, like water heaters, A.C.s, etc., they are not owned by each other. Rheem is owned by a Japanese company named Paloma, and G.E. is owned by a Chinese company named Haier.

G.E. has never sold water heaters under its name, said Mark Reilly, communications manager, G.E. Appliances. The new water heaters will be sold under the company’s Smartwater line of products.

Good luck talking to anyone who knows anything. After 40 mins and three reps I got a phone number that is always ringing “Busy”??? What a joke, never again. If anyone knew anything it would have helped me. They all said how sorry they were and sent me to another phone.

My 10 year old gas water heater started leaking water on top. This was due to no type of sealant used at the factory on the inlet, outlet, and rod threads. I have been a plumber for 30 years and never seen such a poor assembly job. Just a little Teflon tape with some liquid sealant and there would have no leaks for 20-25 years. Whomever is charge of quality control should be fired. I will never recommend any GE appliances to any of my customers and friends.

I bought a gas GE 50 gallon hot water heater (PN#PG48TO9AXK00) from Home Depot in 2014. I had to replace it on 10/30/2020 because the controller kept shutting off the gas/pilot light. I had a plumber come out and he said that he could not warranty the gas controller because the water heater was in such bad condition internally. He put in a borescope and showed me pictures. It was black and red on the inside of the tank and said its a design flaw from the factory. I had purchased this specific tank because it had a 9-year warranty. GE does not honor the warranty unless they inspect it, which I have to pay for. They only cover parts and nothing else, which could take up to 10 months. The warranty is a scam and there should be a class-action lawsuit against this GE department. Do not buy a GE hot water heater from Home Depot. It is a waste of money.

12 years warranty they claim is not true. After 7 years the water heater starts to leak all over. Contact the Csr almost every day for 4 days. All they give me is the runaround refusing to let me talk to supervisor. Finally supervisor on the phone with same attitude. Will take them to court of law.

I bought this water heater to save money because it is hybrid. The service guy has been here 4 times in 4 years. It no longer functions as a hybrid just an expensive electric water heater. Customer service has been transferred to Bradford White who is no better than GE customer service who was completely worthless. I don’t know where these star ratings come from but I only gave it a 1 star because I couldn’t give it 0. Bradford White insists you call a plumber to put a scope on the heater to determine what is wrong then they will send a part and you have to call the plumber back to install. 2 service calls! This is Junk. Don’t even think about buying this GE junk.

My Geospring electric heat pump water heater is 3.5 years old and has been making loud noises for 2 years already. Now its leaking. I have had terrible luck with GE products and will never buy a GE appliance again. Im afraid to call GE to get it repaired after reading all the bad reviews on their service and bad parts.

Warranty is fake. Your water heater goes down. Uhm wait 2 weeks. Hours on a phone to find out they wont even talk to you. Then when you can schedule something its 2 weeks. Then when they do come they charge you anyway. They are a scam!

Our G.E. water heater was still under warranty and for the past two years the heater kept going off and each time we spent 40 minutes or more trying to get someone on the line to help. They sent us a pilot part since the original had been defective. Then they sent an ignitor part because that had failed and most recently over Thanksgiving they were supposed to send a thermonuclear release device which they never sent. We tried repeatedly from the week of Thanksgiving to get help and were finally, after many phone calls and holds were told to get a technician to diagnose the problem.

We did, paying yet again for a tech, who told us that he could repair it but he wouldnt guarantee it as the heater was in poor shape. He advised us to purchase a new one as GE had had so many problems with their units that they had replaced them with Rheem, essentially the same water heater. We chose another and had it installed since we had been smelling gas and did not want to face personal injury or fire.

We emailed GE again and were handed off to several different departments until finally we spoke with one specialist that said because we didnt have the original unit there was nothing that could be done. We insisted on talking to a supervisor and were again put on hold until after 25 minutes we hung up. We feel GE was negligent and we will never buy a GE product again. For anyone considering doing business with GE we urge you to find another brand for anything you need to purchase. They definitely do not stand by their products.

I seem to have had a better experience than most. My GE 75 Gallon tank installed 12 years ago failed and started leaking. Prior to that I had no problems with the tank. My advice to everyone is that when you replace your tank, install a drip pan underneath (about $30.00 at Home Depot) with a PVC drain line to a floor drain or sump pump pit. This way when your tank inevitably starts leaking one day, you wont have a flood in your basement. Your plumber wont mention this, so you need to ask for it.

GEOSPRING HYBRID ELECTRIC WATER HEATER 80 gal – Bought this water heater a year ago and it has had a fault code since day one. GE customer service is terrible. It took 3 months to get someone out (from Sears) and they couldnt fit it. I finally just gave up and just ran it in the electric mode which is not efficient, but at least have hot water. Im very disappointed after spending $2000 on a hot water heater.

You can also find a lot of Rheem parts for your GE water heater on Amazon. The data plate on your GE water heater should be located along the top of the tank. If your water heater is less than 20 years old, a manufacturing date will likely be printed on this label along with the model and serial number.

This is also good to know as if you need parts for your GE Water Heater you should be able to search under the Rheem name as well, which are much more common and sold at Home Depot.

The manufacturing date should look something like this MFG. Date: 04/2008 Below is an of a GE Water Heater data plate. We can see the serial number is GE 0408B3174.

The first two sets of numbers are the month and the second two sets are the year. The unit in the below was built on 04/2008, or April 2008.

This matches the actual printed MFG date on the label as well. If you do not see the MFG Date, turn your attention to the first four digits of the serial number after the ‘GE‘. It also may say ‘GENG‘ which simply means a GE natural gas water heater.
