Ham In The Electric Roaster

I enjoy painting fantasy art, going to art shows, creating delicious dishes, being with my grandkids, taking walks, and reading good books.

Turn on your electric roaster to 275 degrees F. Set the thermometer to alert you when the ham reaches 140 degrees F. Once the oven reaches 275 degrees, the ham will take 15-20 minutes per pound to heat through. An eight-pound ham takes just over 2 hours to heat through.

How to choose a spiral sliced ham?

Spiral sliced hams come in various sized but are usually precooked with a bit of smoke for a delicious flavor. The only downside to spiral hams is that if they are not warmed correctly they will dry out. But no worries! We will help make sure that doesn’t happen.

The best way to ensure a delicious ham is to start with a quality product from the grocery store. I have always had luck with Sams or Costco brand hams. No matter where you purchase it, look for a product that says “with natural juices” for the best flavor and consistency.

While this cooking method can be used on different types of ham, it is only for precooked ham. This method is not for a fresh ham or uncooked ham.

This recipe serves 15 to 20 people. Use any leftovers to make ham and Swiss cheese sliders. To prepare these, spread Hawaiian rolls with mayo and mustard; then top with ham and Swiss cheese before baking in a toaster oven.

Ham is a pork product, which can contain the parasite that causes trichinosis, reports the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. To avoid this food-borne illness, cook ham to an internal temperature of 145 F.

If food is cooked on to the surfaces, remove it with a nonabrasive cleanser or pad. Dont use steel wool because it will scratch the finish.

Finally, wipe the outside of the roaster with a damp cloth and then wipe dry. Dont put the roaster in water or use abrasive cleansers on its exterior.

Cooking a ham in a roaster oven provides an entrée to feed a family or a house full of company. The leftovers can be used to make sandwiches or to flavor bean soup and other dishes.

How to Bake a Juicy Turkey

Turkeys normally come in sizes from 12 pounds all the way up to 25 pounds. Depending on the size of your holiday dinner party, you will buy a turkey to feed approximately 1/4 to 1/2 pound per person.

I like to buy two smaller turkeys for our large family of 14 people instead of one very large one. The smaller turkeys can be a little more tender and juicy. Plus, we have four legs and four wings for those who like them. I cook one in my roaster oven, and my daughter-in-law cooks the other one in hers.

A large 22-quart electric roaster oven with its domed lid can fit up to a 25-pound turkey.

  • Prep Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 3 to 4 hours
  • Serves: 2 to 14 people
  • 1 fresh or frozen (thawed) turkey
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 (15-ounce) can chicken broth
  • 3 stalks celery
  • 1 medium onion
  • Whole garlic cloves
  • 1 apple
  • 1 orange
  • 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons parsley
  • Onion powder, to taste
  • Turn on the electric roaster oven to 350°F. Place the turkey on stainless steel rack, breast-side up. Remove any packages stuck in the neck and back cavities. Pour chicken broth in the bottom of the roaster pan. Cut raw celery, onion, apple, orange, and garlic into large chunks. Place all inside the turkey cavity. (I do not stuff my turkey, but make the stuffing separately in the regular oven.) Tie the legs together to hold the raw vegetables and fruit in during roasting.
  • I rub the entire skin of the raw turkey with olive oil instead of butter. Sprinkle seasonings, parsley, and onion powder over the oiled turkey. Roast according to directions (approximately 13 to 15 minutes per pound, basting every 15 to 30 minutes). Roast until the center temperature reaches 180°F or the pop-up timer is up. Remove from the electric roaster oven to a serving dish, and take out the vegetables and fruit inside the turkey cavity and discard. Save the drippings and broth to make gravy.
  • Tip: If you like a crispy, browned skin, during the last half hour of cooking time, take your turkey from the electric roaster oven and put on a oven roaster pan in a conventional oven at 375°F to brown the skin.
  • Use a Meat Thermometer

I recommend using a meat thermometer to determine the doneness when cooking meat or poultry. Insert the thermometer into the center of the thickest part of the meat. Cook until the temperature for your desired doneness is reached. For example, poultry should be 180°F or well done.
