How Did Chucky Get His Scars

Chucky is the most recognizable murderous doll in the business, but that doesnt mean his look has never changed. By

There is perhaps no more iconic-looking killer doll than Chucky with his red hair, overalls, and piercing blue eyes. Even those who haven’t seen his self-titled TV show or the “Child’s Play” movies can tell you what the murderous horror icon looks like. However, despite being so recognizable, some may have noticed that his look has changed quite a bit over the years.

With “Chucky” returning for Season 2 on USA Network and SYFY, newcomers may be asking themselves why they’ve sometimes seen him with short hair or scars on his face. Well, fear not (maybe a little, it’s Chucky after all), we’re here to break down the characters many looks from over the years.

Without getting too deep into his backstory, the first thing everyone needs to know is that serial killer and voodoo practitioner Charles Lee Ray was mortally wounded in a shootout with police at a toy store and used his last moments to transfer his soul into a Good Guy doll — that season’s hottest kid’s toy.

The doll had red hair, overalls, and a colorful sweater, not to mention some sweet, sweet red-and-white kicks. While it’s nothing close to what Ray sported in real life (a smart suit and long jacket), the new look allowed him to maneuver through life preying on very unsuspecting victims.

However, he quickly began to look different from the average Good Guy doll off the line. In “Childs Play,” he meets with his voodoo mentor who informs him that the longer he spends inside the doll’s body, the more mortal it becomes. Cuts bleed, scars stay, and bruises take time to heal, thus hurting his disguise. The only way to get a real body again is to transfer his soul to the first person he revealed his true identity to.

So, Chucky spends two movies trying to transfer his soul into young Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) but fails. First Andy burns and dismembers him (with help; hes six after all). When very stupid corporate stooges put Chucky put back together, Andy melts him. Dont mess with this kid!

Chucky is portrayed as a vicious serial killer who, as he bleeds out from a gunshot wound, transfers his soul into a “Good Guy” doll and continuously tries to transfer to a human body.

Child’s Play 3 (1991)

The Good Guy doll line has been restarted by Play Pals. As they decide to recycle the old dolls for the new ones, Chuckys remains are unknowingly included in the batch. With his blood melding with the molten plastic, he is once again brought to life in a new doll body. Being the first doll off the assembly line, Chucky is given to the CEO, Sullivan. He brings the doll back to his apartment, where Chucky kills him, and then uses his computer to locate Andy.

Chucky mails himself to Andy at the Kent Military School, but is instead opened by a boy named Ronald Tyler. He decides to use Tyler as his new host, and reveals himself to the boy. He gets ready for the ritual, and disguises his plans as a game called “Hide the Soul”. Unfortunately for Chucky, Cochrane finds Tyler, and as toys are against the rules, takes him away and throws him in the trash. The garbage man takes him and throws him into the truck, but is alarmed to hear a voice shouting from inside. While he goes to look, Chucky slips in the drivers seat and starts the compressor, killing him.

Later that night while searching for Tyler, Chucky breaks into Andys room to attack him. Andy thwarts him off until Shelton comes in, seeing Andy slamming the doll against the floor. He takes Chucky away, claiming he needs it for his sisters birthday, but Chucky escapes again. He is able to eventually locate Tyler, who is playing Hide-and-Seek. When he finds him in Cochranes closet, he has no time to cast the ritual as they are then found by two girls. The girls quickly flee as they hear Cochrane coming back and take Tyler with them, leaving Chucky. Jumping out of the desk armed with a knife, Chucky scares Cochrane into having a heart attack.

The next day, the barber Botnick finds Chucky sitting on his chair, and when he tries to shave his head, his throat is slit with the razor. A few hours later, the school is getting ready for their annual paint ball war game, with the students split into red and blue teams. Chucky steals the red teams rifles, and replaces the paint pellets with live ammunition. Before the game starts, he calls Tyler out to the woods. He reveals his true intentions to the boy, who out of fear stabs the doll and runs back to the game. To get Tyler back, he captures Andys friend Kristen, and using the radio, tells Andy to bring him Tyler or hell kill the girl. During this time, he also shouts insults at both teams in order to get them to start shooting at each other. After they switch hostages, both teams show up and start firing, with students being shot and killed in the crossfire. In the confusion Tyler escapes, and Chucky throws a grenade at the crowd while he chases after the boy.

Capturing Tyler again, the two find their way into a nearby carnival. They go into a haunted house, followed closely by Andy and Kristen. Once inside, the two groups catch up with one another, during which Chucky shoots Kristen in the leg, forcing Andy to take on Chucky alone. As Chucky continues to chase after Tyler, he unintentionally stands underneath a Grim Reaper statue, which slices half of his face off. When Tyler is knocked unconscious by the wing of a giant figure, Chucky begins the chant. However, halfway through the chant, Andy shoots his left arm off with a pistol and knocks him off the mountain of skulls. Once Andy reaches Tyler and wakes him, Chucky leaps back up. Tyler hands Andy a pocket knife, which he uses to cut off Chuckys remaining hand, and throws him off. Chucky falls into a propelling fan, shredding him to pieces.

Seed of Chucky (2004)

Chucky and Tiffanys son Glen has been living in Britain with a ventriloquist named Psychs. Wanting to find his parents, he escapes to Hollywood, where new animatronic dolls of them have been made for the film “Chucky Goes Psycho”. Glen resurrects them with the Heart of Damballa amulet. After the two kill one of the stage hands, their son announces himself. Chucky and Tiffany cannot agree on his gender, and while Chucky believes he is a boy and gives him the name Glen, Tiffany calls her Glenda. For the welfare of their child, Tiffany decides to quit her murdering habits to set a good example. However, Chucky has no intention of quitting, and tries to teach Glen behind her back.

Chucky arranges a “boys night out” for him and Glen, which results in them rear-ending Britney Spears car into a ditch so forcefully that it explodes on impact. They then set their sights on their next victim, the photographer that took the pictures of Chucky. Glen tries to stop his father and save him, but the photographer is so startled by Glens appearance that he hits a shelf where sulphuric acid falls on him. This causes him to die slowly, as the acid eats away his face. Chucky is so thrilled by this, that he sets up a camera to take a photo of them beside his first victim.

During this time, Chucky and Tiffany had come up with a plan to transfer their souls into new human bodies to start a new life. They had chosen the actress Jennifer Tilly and director Redman. And for Glen, they impregnated Jennifer with Chuckys semen. Jennifer is abducted by Chucky while on phone, and tied to her bed, As Tiffany kills Redman, they kidnap Jennifers limousine driver, Stan, as Chuckys replacement body. The voodoo magic that “fuels” the killer dolls has also accelerated the pregnancy, and she soon gives birth to twins. It is then that Chucky has an epiphany. After several years of being an infamous killer doll, Chucky finally accepts, and embraces, his circumstances.

Furious with his decision, Tiffany decides to leave with Glen. Chucky attempts to kill Jennifer to stop Tiffanys plans, only to have Stan take the knife instead. Hearing police sirens in the distance, Chucky is forced to flee, with Jennifer being taken to the hospital. Tiffany and Glen follow, and she manages to transfer her soul in the nick of time, as Chucky breaks through the door and axes Tiffanys doll body. Angered by his father, Glen takes the axe and proceeds to impale and dismember Chucky. Glen asks Chucky if he is proud of him, and Chucky congratulates Glen before being decapitated and killed. However, four years later, human Glen is delivered a strange package. When he opens it, he finds that someone sent him Chuckys dismembered arm, which proceeds to strangle him.

Original Chucky Doll (Child’s Play & Child’s Play 2)

The Good Guy doll which Charles Lee Ray placed his soul in Childs Play is the classic incarnation that started it all. This version of the pint-sized slasher is the basis for all future versions and sports Chuckys recognizable cherubic face, wild red hair, striped shirt, and blue overalls. Chucky is gifted to young Andy Barclay, and after revealing his true nature to the child, Chucky seeks to place his soul in Andys body. Of course, he fails in his mission and ends up burned and chopped into pieces.

In Childs Play 2, the charred remains of the original doll are cleaned, restored, and rebuilt. Since the parts still contain the soul of Chucky, the killer is able to come back to life and once again seek out Andy. This new version of the old Chucky doll is noticeably more sinister looking than its predecessor and has even wilder hair and an angrier look. The rebuilt version of Chucky ends up being melted in liquid plastic and destroyed for good.

Following the events of Childs Play 2, the Good Guy factory resumes operation and removes the destroyed, and still bloody, remains of Chuckys body. Unfortunately, a few drops of Chuckys possessed blood drip into a vat of plastic in the factory, allowing a new Good Guy doll to be manufactured with Chuckys soul once again trapped inside. This new version goes on a hunt for the now-teenage Andy, but Chucky ends up getting sliced into several large chunks by a giant fan in the finale.

In 1998, Chucky was resurrected once again in the horror-comedy Bride of Chucky. After a daring heist, Chuckys girlfriend from his pre-doll days, Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), manages to steal the diced remains of the doll containing her lovers soul. She then carefully sews his body back together, resulting in this incarnations famous facial scars. Using voodoo magic, Tiffany brings Chucky back to life, but shortly thereafter finds herself trapped in a female doll too. The two then embark on a murder spree as they search for an amulet they hope will let them enter new human bodies. Unfortunately for them, Chucky is blown to bits with a revolver and Tiffany expires shortly after giving birth to her and Chuckys child.
