Cousin Ambrose is a scene-stealer in The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina. Hes also quite different from his comic book counterpart.
Cousin Ambrose from Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is the rock n’ roll, house robe-wearing cool warlock, who is also a great confidante and advisor to his cousin Sabrina. He’s obviously much older than he looks, is a total trouble maker, and has even had a rebellious history, including blowing up the Vatican and whatnot.
But in the comics, he wasn’t always this cool necromancer ally to Sabrina. In fact, in some of his appearances, he was a middle-aged moustachioed man, who was almost like a father figure to the teenage witch. And though the new pansexual warlock version of Ambrose is a hit with the viewers, there are certain things about Ambrose’s history that only the comic readers of the franchise will know.
How is Ambrose related to Sabrina? It’s complicated.
Ambrose is a warlock of British descent, but he arrived Sabrinas Greendale universe decades earlier after getting arrested. He had been being imprisoned in the Salem Mortuary for 75 years following an attempt to blow up the Vatican in the 19th century. He worked as a mortician there while also living in the attic of the funeral home. Article continues below advertisement
He was later freed, thanks to Father Blackwood, when he refused to disclose who his accomplices were in the Vatican incident. Father Blackwood was impressed by Ambroses loyalty, leading him to grant Ambrose his long-awaited freedom.
The warlock was then allowed to attend high school with Sabrina, who is his closest confidante.
Sabrina and Ambrose consider themselves to be cousins, as Aunt Hilda (Lucy Davis) raised Ambrose after his father died. His dad was killed by warlocks when Ambrose was just a child, and he sought validation from other father figures. This led to his enchantment with the revolutionary group that set out to destroy the Vatican.
The identity of Ambroses birth parents is unknown, so its unclear if hes a birth relative to Sabrina, or if they just consider themselves cousins because they were both raised by Aunt Hilda. Sabrina has never mentioned having a biological uncle on the show.
We have a feeling that Ambroses fathers identity will be a part of the story in the seasons to come. Article continues below advertisement
Throughout Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Ambrose is an old British warlock of African descent. Despite his age, he appears as a muscular young man in his twenties. Because he was trapped in the house by a curse, Ambrose was more often than not barefoot and wearing trousers and a silk robe on a bare chest. When working in the embalming chamber, Ambrose wears goggles, rubber gloves, and an apron to protect himself from blood and other fluids while working on corpses. In the rare occasions when Ambrose left the house, he wore a velvet blazer, shirt, pants, and Chelsea boots.
Ambrose is a sagacious and witty man who is always ready to assist and advise Sabrina in her teenage witch dramas. Although Ambrose enjoys taking part in hexing people or indulging his own lust with other witches of all genders, he is also a learned witch who has personally experienced the price to pay for breaking Witch-Law. Ambroses knowledge of witchcraft spans many occult disciplines and practices, including exorcisms and necromancy. Because he is confined to the home, Ambrose has slowly developed a form of depression fueled by a sense of loneliness and isolation that has become clear during the attack of Batibat, a sleep demon, at the Spellman house.

As a full warlock, Ambrose ages at a slower rate than mortals.
Along with his supernatural abilities, Ambrose is also good at swordsmanship and hand-to-hand combat.
Hilda is Ambroses aunt, who hes known for more than 75 years. She also helped Ambrose escape imprisonment at the Academy. She knew that the Weird Sisters would use the bones from the chicken she cooked to torture Ambrose, which is what allowed Ambrose to make a skeleton key to free himself.

When Ambrose started working at the Academy of Unseen Arts, he began a temporary affair with Prudence during the Lupercalia, while his boyfriend Luke left the country on behalf of her father. After the strange death of Luke and the imprisonment of Ambrose in prison, Prudence was his ruthless overseer. They had despised each other for a long time, but Prudences attitude toward him began to change for the better when he decided to stay at the Academy to warn the witches about the witch-hunters attack instead of running away and saving himself.
Later, Prudence begged Ambrose and his aunties to help her Sisters and reveals that Blackwood poisoned the entire coven. After defeating Lucifer, Ambrose and Prudence embarked on a quest to hunt down Father Blackwood. Before leaving, Prudence beheads Blackwood’s statue and told Ambrose that her father wouldnt be easy to hunt down and to kill. Ambrose vowed to seek his true destiny as a witch, something shared by Prudence.

Afterward, he asked Ambrose out on a date despite the fact that Ambrose couldnt leave the house. So with Hildas help, he astral-projected to Cerberus Books, where he interacted with Luke, who was very impressed with Ambroses attempt to blow up the Vatican. Its through his relationship with Luke that Ambroses house arrest is lifted and that he got in close with Father Blackwood.
5 Ambrose Has A Subtle Connection To Harry Potter’s Mythology
In the 2014 comic book, Ambrose is shown possessing two cobra familiars, Nag and Nagaiana. He actually moves in with them into the Spellman household, however, on the show they are hardly ever mentioned. They may sound very familiar to Nagini from the Potter-verse, the female maledictus who can turn into a snake.
It’s obvious that both the names have their origin in Indian folkloric traditions. Nag and Nagaiana were originally human royalty who were tricked by a sorcerer and turned into snakes.
