New Rodrick Heffley Actor

There is a new “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” movie titled “The Long Haul” and it basically recasts the Heffley family as it ushers in a new generation of films for the series.

The trailer for the movie has been released and fans of the franchise are not at all happy about the new faces, some even describing the film as a mere parody.

Viewers are most upset about the new Rodrick Heffley, who is now played by Charlie Wright in “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul.”

The “Ingrid Goes West” actor will replace the original Rodrick, “The 100” star Devon Bostick, who graciously relinquished the role to Wright in a reaction video for the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” trailer.

“I just wanted to say to Charlie Wright, the new Rodrick, its time that I … gracefully pass on this torch to you as Rodrick,” Bostick said in the video.

“Its time [for me] to let go and know theres a new man in town. Someones got to rock n roll, and its you. I wish you all the best and keep punishing Greg,” he went on to say.

Although Bostick seems to be happy about his successor in “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul,” a lot of fans were disappointed about the change, demanding that it affected the franchise as a whole and that it betrayed their childhood.

Fans are not just upset about the new Rodrick but the rest of the new cast as well. Others are not too thrilled about the new Greg, Jason Drucker, either although OG actor, Zachary Gordon gives his stamp of approval.

“Congratulations on the new Wimpy Kid film. Some of my fondest memories were making those memories. Although I am not the Wimpy Kid anymore, Im glad to see that the new cast is experiencing some of the great times that I did while making the previous films,” he said via J-14.

“Wishing you the best of luck and I look forward to seeing you in The Long Haul,” the actor went on to say about the next-generation “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” cast.

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” follows the Heffley family, who goes on a road trip to attend Meemaws 90th birthday party. However, it goes “hilariously off course” after Greg schemes to bring them to a video-gaming convention instead.

The first Diary Of A Wimpy Kid movie arrived in 2010, with a cast that included Zachary Gordon as Greg, Steve Zahn (War For The Planet Of The Apes) as his father Frank and Devon Bostick as evil older brother Rodrick. The film proved to be a hit and two sequels quickly followed; Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules in 2011 and Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days in 2012. By the time Dog Days arrived it was becoming clear the young cast was beginning to age out of their roles, and it appeared the third film would mark the end of the franchise.

The first three movies featured a great cast so why did Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul recast the series, including bringing in a new Rodrick?

Maybe a fifth movie will act as another soft reboot and introduce another new cast, but given the response to Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, the franchise will probably rest for a little while. While the new Rodrick and Heffley performers always faced an uphill struggle to win the acceptance of the fanbase, the issues with the movie mostly come down to a weak script.

Unfortunately, Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul proved to a huge letdown, relying on lazy gags that rarely landed. The new cast couldnt do much to improve the lame material either, and the reaction to the new Rodrick, played by Charlie Wright (Ingrid Goes West) was decidedly mixed. The fourth movie also underperformed when compared to the original movies, and while there are plenty of other books in the series to adapt, another sequel may not happen.

The first three movies featured a great cast, especially Devon Bostick (The 100) as Rodrick, so why did Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul recast the Heffley family? Diary Of A Wimpy Kid is based on the book series by Jeff Kinney, which are journals written by main character Greg Heffley. The books arent afraid to show Greg as kind of unlikable, lazy and selfish, and the series charts the strained relationships between Greg, his family and best friend.
