What is the GO Plus? The GO Plus is a gadget designed to make playing Pokémon GO easier. The small device can be connected to the smartphone via Bluetooth, which enables pairing with the game.
So it recognizes when you are near a PokéStop or a Pokémon and vibrates. With the help of a button on the device, you can then trigger a catch attempt or turn the PokéStop without having to pick up your smartphone.
The Pokéminers, a group of dataminers, have now found clues in the game code that there could be an improvement to the GO Plus in the future. We’ll show you what it’s all about.
However, all information from the data miners should be viewed with a certain degree of scepticism. Although most of the findings are actually implemented in the game, this is not official information. Thus, Niantic can adjust or even delete the data at any time.
Pokémon Go Plus — The dated original
If you want a simple way to speed up your Pokémon Go progress without losing the Poké-essence, the Pokémon Go Plus is the device for you. It features a plastic build that screams “I’m playing Pokémon Go”, so it’s also a good way to meet fellow players on the street.

Whenever a Pokémon or Pokéstop is nearby, the device will vibrate and light up, making the Pokémon Go Plus easy to use. The light indicates if it’s a new or duplicate Pokémon, and pushing the button will spin the Pokéstop or throw a single Poké ball. If the first Poké Ball fails, the Pokémon escapes.
It might seem like a bummer that it only throws a single Poké Ball (and never a Great Ball or higher), but it’s worth mentioning that both the other devices on this list (the Poké Ball Plus and the Go-tcha) work the same way. You’ll have to pull out your phone to use berries or better types of Poké Balls. The Pokémon Go Plus battery is a major drawback.
The worst part about the Pokémon Go Plus is the battery. It comes with a single CR2032 battery, and you’ll need to purchase a new battery to keep the fun going. You can buy a new Pokémon Go Plus battery here, but it is an added hassle in the age of rechargeable devices.
It’s worth noting that although it isn’t available yet, there is a Pokémon Go Plus+ (yes, that’s plus plus) on the way. It appears to be similar to the original, if a little bit more stylish. Powered by a single CR2032 battery – which lasts for months – the Pokémon GO Plus is a neat little accessory that has played a huge role in our Pokémon GO experience since launch. While its not marked as being water-resistant, our unit has (accidentally) been put through the wash on more than one occasion and still works perfectly.
Right now, we cant fault the Go-tcha Evolve. It improves on the original model and the full-colour screen is a real bonus. Its slightly larger, but its not what wed call an ugly product – so theres no real shame in being seen wearing it when youre out and about. Battery life is good, and the fact that it tracks your steps as well as helps your monster hunting makes it even more appealing (especially as the process of playing Pokémon GO is sure to boost your daily step count). For the time being, this appears to be the dream device for dedicated Pokémon GO players.
Unlike the original Go-tcha, the battery on this unit seems pretty robust and its still going strong after five months of solid, daily use. The only downside is that its quite large and cannot be worn on the wrist, like the original Pokémon GO Plus and Go-tcha devices. Even so, its the main device we use in our monster hunting – and we honestly cant see the newer Poké Ball Plus changing that.
While its mainly marketed as a controller for Pokémon: Lets Go, the Poké Ball Plus can also function like a normal Pokémon GO Plus device. When paired with your phone, it does exactly what the standard version does, with a press of the B button allowing you to perform spins and attempt catches. However, it does offer one advantage over the vanilla edition – if youve got a mon riding inside then it will automatically grab items from nearby Pokéstops without you having to do anything. Bonus!
By far the best Autocatcher is the Megacom Duo. Its the one Ive had the longest, the one that stays connected the longest, the most durable, the hardest to lose, and the one with the best battery life (using rechargeable AAAs I get nearly 3 weeks off 2.) And Ive heard the new 2022 version is even better from friends that went ahead and got it.
How do you pair a Pokemon Go Plus?
First, make sure your phone’s Bluetooth is on. Pair with your smartphone and then open the Pokemon Go app. Click the Pokeball icon and choose to go to the Settings. Once you see an option to connect to the Pokemon Go Plus, tap on it and it should start searching for the device.
Tap on the device to sync with your phone and it should light up to notify you that they are now connected. Now, you don’t have to look at your smartphone all the time. Simply put it in your pocket while the gadget keeps you in the game.
