How to smoke a turkey

  • Heat your smoker or grill to 225 degrees F.
  • Tuck the wing tips under to stabilize the bird and keep the wingtips from burning.
  • Stuff the the turkey cavity with the apple, onion, and herbs.
  • Line the disposable aluminum pan with orange slices, placing the prepared turkey on top of the orange slices. Pour the apple juice (or liquid of your choice) along with the turkey neck into the drippings pan.
  • Insert a meat thermometer into the turkey breast at the thickest part of the breast as well as the thickest part of the thigh of the bird. Be sure these are oven-safe thermometers.
  • Smoke the whole turkey on the grill or smoker for 30 minutes per pound.
  • Once the thermometers have reached an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit remove the whole bird from the smoker and cover it with aluminum foil letting the turkey rests for 15 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute.

  • Be sure the turkey is properly and safely thawed. I have several methods of thawing a frozen turkey safely if you are new to cooking a frozen turkey.

    How long do you smoke a turkey on Rec Tec?

    Place the turkey on the cooking mat on the REC TEC at 350 degrees. Cook until the internal temperature in the thigh of the turkey is 165-170 degrees (approximately 12-15 minutes per pound), about 5 to 7 hours depending on the size of your turkey.

    How do you cook a turkey on a rec TEC pellet grill?

    Pre-heat recteq to 275℉ degrees. Coat both sides of the turkey breast in salt and pepper and place on the recteq. After about 2 hours, your internal temp. will be around 130℉.

    How do you smoke a turkey in a Recteq smoker?

    1. Pre-heat recteq to 350℉.
    2. Inject turkey with marinade.
    3. Rub skin with olive oil.
    4. Liberally apply seasoning.
    5. Smoke turkey at 350℉ until the internal temp. reaches 165℉.

    How long does it take to smoke a turkey in a pellet grill at 350?

    Assuming that the smoker is maintaining a consistent temperature of 350 degrees, the turkey should cook at a rate of 13 minutes per pound. Therefore, if you’ve followed our advice and prepped a 12-pound turkey, it should finish cooking in just over 2-1/2 hours.
