What Happened To Campbell’S Chili Beef Soup

The label of Campbells new Fiesta Chili Beef with beans suggests this soup “makes easy Mexican dishes!” It sells for 83 cents for the 111/4-ounce can.

Don Russell (married, five children at home, ages 6-16): “Campbells missed the bulls-eye on this one. We made the mistake of preparing Fiesta Chili Beef Soup the traditional way the directions call for – adding one can of water. What did we think of the resultant soup? It simply tasted like watered down chili. This soup failed to win over anyone at our house. Youre probably better off to use this soup in some sort of Mexican dish.”Edyth Jensen (married, three children at home): “As a soup, this is not a choice for us because if I am eating chili, I prefer it thick, not runny. However, as an additive for Mexican dishes, tacos, tostados, etc., it would be great. It has a good spicy flavor. I will use it in the future.”

Nihla Lake (married, two children at home): “We tried the quick taco recipe printed on the label. The tacos were tasty with a rich beefy flavor but not overly spicy or hot. The only complaint – a usual one with canned soups – too much sodium. Well buy this soup again for use in Mexican dishes.”

Linda C. Tingey (single mother, two teenage boys at home): “I got one spoonful of this before my 18-year-old son ate it all. He did let me dip my spoon in it to taste it. Its got a good zip to it and is one of the better canned chilis that Ive tried. The price is comparable and its just darned good. Well buy it again.”

Bill Allred (single): “This product seems to be a can of canned chili that the Campbells folks would like to have us use either as soup or as an ingredient in other dishes. I mixed the can up as soup. Go ahead, add water and youve got a bowl of watery canned chili. What a modern convenience. You could buy any brand of canned chili and add water.

“As far as the recipe on the back of the can goes – well, why add a can of this to your home taco recipe? Its just a can of bland chili. Am I missing something here? What a useless product.”

Conclusion: Hmmm? Is it soup yet? Is it chili? Seems like Fiesta Chili Beef cant decide what it wants to be when it grows up! Youll enjoy this in Mexican dishes, but Fiesta Chili Beef fails to make the grade as a chili “soup.”

– NOTE: Merlin Sampson from Staff of Life, tells us that an ingredient that worried one of our testers, adipic acid used in Minute Jel, (Testing column, Dec. 27, 1994) is a natural fruit acid that adds tartness and can be found on the Jell-O list of ingredients as well.
