Goodwood, a tiny hamlet in Ontario, Canada, became an unlikely tourist attraction amid the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic.
Thats because the small community of 663 residents outside of Toronto is the real-life “Schitts Creek,” a show about a wealthy family relegated to moving into their only remaining asset: a run-down motel in a tiny town they had bought as a joke years ago.
The six-season Canadian comedy has won numerous accolades, but most notably swept the 72 Primetime Emmy Awards for its final season, receiving a record-setting 15 nominations and becoming the first comedy to take home nine Emmys in a single night, including all four major acting categories.
Fans, sometimes referred to as “Schittheads,” have since descended on Goodwood, one of the towns where the show was filmed — for better or for worse.
In fact, Dan Levy, the shows co-creator and one of its stars, asked fans to stay away in a tweet.
“The towns where we shot Schitts Creek were so lovely and accommodating to us. Please show them the same respect. Visiting right now is a threat to the residents health and safety. Thanks for understanding,” he wrote.
Since Canadas borders are currently closed to most foreign nationals due to the pandemic, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that “travel increases your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19,” keep scrolling to get a taste of what Goodwood is really like.
Honestly, the whole thing is a delight, and O’Hara, in particular, is absolutely hilarious.
There are Reddit threads devoted to answering this question.
Schitts Creek is town (Moira once called it a “hamlet”) of quaint surroundings and very few businesses and places of interest, the most prominent of them, Bobs Garage, Café Tropical, and Rose Apothecary being located along on a wide Main Street. Beyond the Main Street the other businesses shown are the Town Hall, Teds Veterinary Clinic, and the Rosebud Motel. The town is about 4,500 acres, most of it being open fields and shady wooded areas.
The town is shown to be the home to largely unsophisticated, but honest, down-to-Earth, and hard working people who are always eager to give a helping hand, or a happy smile to anyone in need, especially the Rose Family. It is also interesting to note the townsfolk not showing any expressions of homophobia to Davids sexuality, as they simply accept it. The town was also listed on a guide of the most random cities in North America in Vice Magazine.

“Where everyone fits in.”
In 1895, Schitt family siblings Horace and his unnamed sister discovered and developed the land that would become the town of Schitts Creek, thus becoming the towns founders. Horace would also became the first Mayor of Schitts Creek; Generations later and the family would still have mayoral power in the town, due to everyone in Schitts Creek having accepted the saying: “Who needs elections when you can keep having sons?”. Since 1997, the mayor and family patriarch is Roland Schitt, the fourth Schitt to be Mayor since his great-grandfather, Horace.
It can be assumed that Schitts Creek is in the western portion of Central Ontario. At one point in Season 1, Roland mentions Highway 10 (which runs from Owen Sound to Mississauga via Shelburne and Orangeville) by name, implying that the highway runs through or near the town. This is fitting, since the motel used as the Rosebud is located in Orangeville.
