Classic Disney Channel show, The Proud Family, has gained a vast amount of attention now that the titular family is back with a reboot ‘The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder’ on Disney Plus. One question viewers are pushing to know is why the Gross sisters are blue.

Four new characters will also be introduced in the reboot. Keke Palmer will be playing activist Maya, A Boogie wit da Hoodie will be voicing KG, and Zachary Quinto and Billy Porter will be playing their adoptive fathers.
Why are the Gross Sisters blue?
The Gross Sisters (Nubia, Gina and Olei) are three bullies who attend Willie T. Ribbs Middle School. The sisters are always stealing Penny Proud’s money and causing chaos.
The Gross Sisters and their family are entirely blue, including their clothes aside from the sisters who wear black overalls. The official Disney Fandom state that the reason they are blue is because “their family cannot afford lotion and they work in the hot sun all day.” The blue colour was meant to display how dry their skin was from the sun which is often termed as having ‘ashy skin.’
This is suggested when Penny turns the same colour as the Gross Sisters as she is trying to emulate them and says to the audience “Yeah, I’m ashy, and yeah, I’m in boot camp” in response to the audience seeing her changed appearance.
To many fans’ surprise, at least one Gross sister makes an appearance in the reboot. Seen as the reboot had a mission to diversify their characters portraying accurate representations of Blackness through a positive lens. It was widely assumed that the Gross Sisters would be left in the 2000s original.
