Sir Thomas Lipton, a 40-year-old Glasgow-born businessman and inventor, saw a chance in 1880 to provide tea with a quality guarantee and reasonable prices for everyone. In order to sell his teas straight from the tea garden to the tea pot, he started by buying tea estates in Ceylon, which is now Sri Lanka. He then arranged for inexpensive packaging and shipping. In 1893, he established the Thomas J Lipton Co. , a tea packaging company based in Hoboken, New Jersey, with its factory and headquarters In 1939, Lipton joined the dehydrated soup market and established the Lipton soups brand. He started years of meticulous testing, reformulating, and assessing to achieve the modern Lipton soup brands’ consistent quality. Due to its ease of use and deliciousness, the 1954 California Dip recipe—now known as the “Lipton Onion Dip”—which mixes onion soup mix with sour cream, became incredibly popular. Over time, new flavors and soup products were added to the Lipton soup lineup as it became clear that certain varieties were better suited for use in recipes than others. The current product lines were introduced in the following years: 1970 for Lipton Cup-A-Soup, 1980 for Lipton Soup Secrets, and 1992 for Lipton Recipe Secrets. Nowadays, the Lipton brand provides a large selection of teas and soups.
