Making The Blue Floral Coral From Sliced Pool Noodles

How To Cut Pool Noodles To Make Coral?

The scalloped foam pool noodles make lovely floral-looking slices if you can find one. This is another easy element for your design. Just slice the foam noodle into 1″ slices. Set one of the slices on its side. Place a second slice on top of the first one by positioning it off-center and on its side. Put some glue on the bottom of that slice using the low melt glue gun, then reposition it off-center in the same location. Repeat with another slice.

These can be made as short or tall as you like. These actually stood and balanced quite well on their own because the composition I made is a shorter version. Ultimately, they are glued to the foam board securely.

How To Make The Green Seagrass From Pool Noodles

Simply cut a length of a foam noodle to create the seagrass. The spaghetti has been cut to 16 inches for this display. Next, make five 1-1/4-inch-deep slits in the noodle. If the sections are not completely equal, try to make them somewhat equal but don’t stress about it.

4 of the loose sections should be placed along the edge of the counter with the noodle lying on its side. Slice the remaining portion to resemble a blade of grass, gradually moving from the section’s edge to its center at the conclusion.

Hold the blade in place as if you are about to fillet a fish. Slice each section in half to thin out the “blades of grass.” The foam noodle in the picture has 3/4″ thick walls. Use the knife to make slices that gradually decrease in thickness from 3/4″ to about 1/4″ at the tip.

The leaves appear to be standing straight up at this point because they return to their upright position after being bent. Therefore, down the length of each blade, use the knife to make slices about 1/4 to 1/2 inch apart that are just into but not through the material. This makes it a little more malleable.

Next, take a heat gun and carefully apply heat down the inside of the ‘grass blades’ while bending the blades to shape them. Be careful to keep your fingers away from the heat gun! Also, be very cautious with the heat gun. You need to keep it moving. If you hold it in one place for very long, you might have a hole. Practice on a spare piece first. Hold the foam leaves in more curved organic forms until the blades are cool and hold the shape.

During the summer, it seems like every Dollar Store, craft store, and Five Below has them outside their stores as a fun “twist” to use in an art sculpture or party decor. I’ve even used them for waterproof floral foam. We enjoyed learning how to cut them in this way and even created sculptures out of them!

3. Return and re-start at the top once you have reached the bottom. Each noodle should give you 2-3 curly pieces. If you mess up, don’t worry. Save the tiny pieces, especially if you’re going to use it for sculpture or decoration. Even though my curly pieces were far from perfect, that only added to the “art’s” originality.
