What is in Beef Stew Seasoning Mix?

  • Flour – it helps the stew thicken!
  • Oregano
  • Basil
  • Rosemary
  • Parsley
  • Paprika
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Celery Seed
  • Onion Powder
  • Salt and Pepper

These spices and herbs together make the most flavorful beef stew – you’ll be ditching the packets in no time! It works on the stovetop or in a slow cooker recipe.

As a side note, if you’re not a huge fan of pepper, make sure to read the comments! Some people find this to be too peppery. You’re only using 2-3 tablespoons of the mixture per 1 pound of stew meat and you want it to be well seasoned, so I obviously think it’s great the way it’s written! But you can always add more pepper at the end, so if you’re unsure, start with a smaller amount.

Optional Ingredients (Use One or the Other)

  • ¼ teaspoon Ground Sage – Of the two options, this is my favorite.
  • ¼ teaspoon Marjoram – Marjoram tastes similar to thyme, but a tad bit sweeter with a stronger aroma.

This recipe is as simple as finding the right ingredients and mixing them together. Measuring is key here, so dont try to eyeball anything!

  • Measure. First, measure out each ingredient and add it to a small mixing bowl. (1 ½ tablespoons salt, ½ tablespoon pepper, ½ tablespoon garlic powder, ½ tablespoon onion powder, ½ tablespoon paprika, 2 teaspoons basil, 2 teaspoons celery salt, 1 teaspoon oregano, ¼ teaspoon rosemary, ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper plus either of the optional herbs, ¼ teaspoon ground sage or marjoram).
  • Mix. Mix well until all the herbs and spices are evenly distributed throughout the blend. If you would like a super-fine consistency, you may use a spice or coffee grinder to break down the herbs, but it is not essential.
  • Make beef stew. Use half of the mixed beef stew seasoning to season a beef stew recipe with approximately 4 cups of broth (and 1-2 pounds beef). I suggest adding 2 bay leaves to your stew as it cooks, but be sure to remove them before serving.

This recipe yields 5 ¼ tablespoons of seasoning (with one of the optional ingredients, otherwise the yield is 5 tablespoons). This is enough for 2 beef stew recipes.

Store your seasoning in an airtight container, then place it in a cool, dark area like a cabinet or pantry. This keeps moisture out and keeps it from clumping.

The seasoning should be used within 3 months. Make sure to shake and combine herbs and spices before using after storing.
