How Long to Microwave Ramen

First, add 2 cups of water to a microwave-safe bowl. Then place the dried ramen noodles in the water.

You dont need to submerge the noodles in the water. The steam will begin to cook the noodles as the water heats up.

You don’t have to transfer the ramen to another bowl if you have the instant noodles that come in a styrofoam cup, but you can if you prefer. However, it might be challenging to fit enough water in the cup for a more soupy consistency if you want ramen soup.

Place a cover on top of the bowl. You can use a cover specifically made for microwave cooking.

Or, use a microwave-safe plate or plastic wrap. Make sure to leave a small opening for venting if you use plastic wrap.

Ingredients

Aside from your dependable microwave oven, of course, microwave ramen only requires two simple ingredients. They are available online and in almost every grocery store:

Use any brand of ramen or ramen noodle soup. Any instant noodle is fine, but we typically purchase Maruchan or Top Ramen.

You can also use chicken broth, beef broth, or vegetable broth in place of water. Whenever I make ramen stir-fries or soup, I like to use broth.

You will need a microwaveable bowl to cook the ramen. Since the bowl gets hot, I also advise using hot mitts, oven mitts, or pot holders to keep your hands safe.

Variations

Again, removing the seasoning packet and replacing it with your own preferred flavors is the best way to upgrade instant ramen.

To the noodles, we like to add a little bit of butter and olive oil. We also include a small amount of Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

Add some soy sauce, garlic powder, sesame oil, ginger, onion powder, and rice vinegar to the noodles if you want some Asian flavors. For more umami flavor, you can also include finely chopped green onions and sesame seeds.

However, you can really include anything you like, including hot sauce, hoisin sauce, Sriracha, Spam, bean sprouts, and soft-boiled eggs.

You may have seen Kylie Jenner’s well-known ramen recipe on social media, in which she cooks her ramen in a small saucepan with an egg that has been beaten raw. The egg won’t properly cook in the microwave, so this won’t work.

However, if you choose to do this, feel free to cook the egg separately and top the microwave noodles with it.

FAQ

How long do you boil raw ramen noodles?

For proper cooking, the intention is to maintain a rolling boil in the pot. Cook to the 2:00 minute mark for a firm noodle. If you prefer a particular level of noodle firmness, this might be the best option. If you cook the noodles for just 30 seconds longer (2:30–3 minutes), the noodles will be softer.

How do I know when my ramen noodles are done?

The noodles are done when they begin to appear a little bit yellow. The ramen should have completely disintegrated by this point, and a few noodles should stick to your fork when you dip it into the water. The ramen is ready to eat when it is flexible.
