This side dish has been passed down through the family from my great grandmother’s sister in law, aunt Pat.
I absolutely love the fact that I have recipes from everyone in our family that I can keep in one little cookbook! I also love tradition.
This recipe is perfect for your next side dish! Coleslaw is a classic side dish that can go with pretty much everything. It goes well with barbeque, pork, chicken, you name it!
This is also a very popular side dish in many restaurants. There are so many different variations of making coleslaw.
I personally like the traditional way of making it, although, I would not turn down the opportunity to try a new way of making coleslaw either!
Since there are different variations, here are a couple of web links I have found that also appear to be simple to make!
- 1/2 medium-size head green cabbage.
- 1/4 medium-size head purple cabbage.
- 2 large carrots.
- 1 cup Marzetti® Original Slaw Dressing.
- 3 tablespoons lemon juice, or juice of 1 lemon.
- 2 teaspoons poppyseeds, plus more for sprinkling on top.
- Salt and pepper, to taste.

Ingredients for our Simple Cole Slaw
Can I save my leftover slaw?
Here are our thoughts on that… anytime a dish is made with mayo, if it has been left out for more that 3 hours, unfortunately you need to throw it out. The risk of bacteria growing is just too high and it is not worth it! If it was chilled the entire time, it will be fine to put in the refrigerator and safe to eat for 3-5 days. The slaw dressing tends to break down the cabbage after a while, so we try to eat any leftovers within the first 48 hours (which isn’t hard to do around our house!)
