Wonton noodles and I go wayyyy back. It’s one of those mouthwatering noodles with a fantastic springy and chewy texture. It’s a meal like no other when these noodles are covered in that dry wonton noodle sauce, served with wontons and some leafy greens.
The majority of Asian restaurants will serve wonton noodles in a warm soup, but it’s rare to find dry wonton noodles covered in a garlicky, sesame-flavored soy sauce. You may be wondering how dry wonton noodles can taste good, but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! There’s something very tasty about blanched chewy noodles that are blanched in a broth and then served on a plate with char siu or wontons, but I try to take it up a notch by coating thes with sesame oil.

For more than 50 years, my father has been making Chinese food, including as a young man living on his own in Guangzhou, as the executive chef of his own restaurant, and as a devoted father in our home.

One of my all-time favorite dishes is wonton noodle soup, and when we first started this channel, it was one of the recipes I really wanted to share because my parents used to make it for me pretty frequently. Like many of you, I have a lot of fond memories associated with this dish.
Wontons are pronounced “wahn tn” in Cantonese, which roughly translates to “swallowing a cloud.” They are a mainstay of Cantonese cuisine, and it is nearly impossible NOT to come across a restaurant or food stall serving a cheap, comforting bowl of wonton noodle soup in cities like Guangzhou and Hong Kong.
In contrast to the wonton recipe we previously shared, this recipe focuses solely on cooking the noodles and broth.
