It’s safe to say that everyone’s favorite comfort food is pasta. This useful guide will provide you with the knowledge you need to understand which types of pasta you can enjoy while following a low FODMAP diet, as it is such a versatile base for the tastiest of meals, but is pasta off limits while doing so?

If you’re following a low FODMAP diet, pasta is a welcome quick and simple meal option. A low FODMAP diet can occasionally feel very limiting, challenging, and downright boring, but if you arm yourself with the right knowledge, it can actually be quite delectable!

Traditionally, pasta is made from wheat, which contains gluten. The majority of people mistakenly believe that because pasta contains gluten, it is not low FODMAP friendly. When it comes to FODMAPs, gluten is not the problem (although it most definitely is if you are also gluten intolerant).

Wheat, which is high in fructans (oligosaccharides, or the “O” in FODMAP), is the real offender. If you’re interested in learning more about fructans and the foods they can be found in, I highly suggest reading this fantastic article.

Though it only amounts to about 1/2 cup of cooked pasta—which, let’s face it, isn’t much—a small amount of pasta containing wheat IS acceptable on the low FODMAP diet, according to Monash University.

Important Reminder: Even though Monash University, the leading source of low FODMAP research, provided this information, you should always speak with a registered dietitian or your doctor before beginning any special diet, such as the low FODMAP diet.

The availability of low FODMAP pasta options has greatly improved in recent years. Pastas made from the following ingredients are some to keep an eye out for:

Asian Noodles Tested by Monash University

The following have undergone testing by Monash, and I have included their suggested serving sizes:

No low FODMAP serving size is advised for wheat noodles, which in their app resemble ramen. Cooking even a mere 1/2 cup (84 g) revealed fructan and fructose content. The serving size for traditional wheat pasta, which is 1/2 cup (74 g) cooked, is low in FODMAPs.

Low FODMAP serving size for vermicelli noodles, which resemble rice-based noodles, is 1 cup (113 g) of cooked noodles. The serving size’s low FODMAP content is noted in the small print. This is probably because they are built upon “no” FODMAP rice. Watch our friend Ngoc make our low-FODMAP summer rolls using vermicelli noodles in the video below.

Kelp Noodles: Low FODMAP serving size is 1 cup (113 g) cooked. The small print notes that the serving size is low in FODMAPs.

Rice Stick Noodles: Low FODMAP serving size is 1 cup (220 g) cooked.

Soba (made from wheat & buckwheat, seen below): Low FODMAP serving size is ⅓ cup (90 g) cooked. The small print notes that the serving size is low in FODMAPs.

Fresh Pasta Brands I Love:

  • Taste Republic – They have both gluten free and grain free pasta options. My favorites are their Linguine and Tortellini.
  • Cappellos – This brand is better saved for after the elimination phase as it does contain some honey and cassava which, while they do have low FODMAP serving sizes, may be best enjoyed in the reintroduction phase. All of their pastas are grain free and paleo diet friendly.
