Well, it’s finally happened: As of yesterday, M trains are now running into the city on weekends.
Plans to increase weekend service on the M train line have been in the works since July 2013, but only went into effect this weekend as a result of an $18 million plan to improve subway service.
So, yeah, we still won’t have M trains running all the way to 71st Avenue in Queens (this is our greatest wish), but at the very least, riders will no longer have to make that pesky transfer to the M at Myrtle Avenue/Broadway during the day. And that definitely counts for something.
What NYC trains go above ground?
Southern Brooklyn (This is the only elevated section of the Independent Subway, which crosses the Gowanus Canal, and it’s the the highest point above the surface on the subway system. Canarsie Line (L) from midway between Halsey and Wilson, and midway between Wilson and Bushwick.
Why was the V train discontinued?
V service was discontinued in June 2010 due to budgetary concerns, being replaced entirely (except for service to the Second Avenue station) by a rerouted M train. X is used as a placeholder for routes under development.
Why is the G train so short?
The G was to be truncated to Court Square at all times to make room for the V, but due to rider opposition, it was cut back only on weekdays until 8:30 p.m. Several G trains terminated at Church Avenue. On July 5, 2009, the G was once again extended south at all times to Church Avenue.
