The number of ornaments you choose to hang on your tree is ultimately based on personal preference and there is no exact calculation. However, using our chart can be a helpful starting point when purchasing ornaments to ensure even coverage based on your tree height. We suggest purchasing an extra box or set of ornaments in each color you choose to help ensure you have a few replacements on hand should any of your ornaments become lost or broken.

Mixing and matching ornaments sizes is a great way to add variety and depth to your Christmas tree design. When decorating your tree, add large or heavy ornaments to the interior of the tree where branches are thickest to protect them and add depth. Smaller ornaments work best on the tips of branches. Fill gaps in the tree with varying ornament sizes and decorations and try to keep things even. It helps to take a step back and view your progress to ensure even coverage!

If you prefer to have less ornaments on your tree compared to the average person, then you can multiply the recommended number of ornaments by the percentage you think you prefer. For example, if you think you would like only 60% of the number of ornaments that most people use, you can multiply the recommended number by .6. If youd like 80% of what most people use, you would multiply the recommended number by .8.

In our experience the average ornament size used by residential customers is between 3 and 4 inches, so our Christmas Ornament Calculator™ result is based on an average ornament size of 3.5 inches. The recommended number of ornaments will be just perfect for most people, not so many that the tree looks overloaded, but not so few that it looks sparsely decorated.

If you prefer to have a very heavily decorated tree, with more ornaments than most people use, you can multiply the recommended number of ornaments by the percentage you think you prefer. For example, if you prefer 30% more ornaments than most people, you can multiply the result by 1.3. If you prefer 50% more ornaments than most people, you can multiply the result by 1.5.

For many, the most enjoyable time of the holiday season is decorating the Christmas tree. However, if you are looking for some help this year, let us guide you through the basics of making a beautiful tree. Ornaments, lights, and garland are a good start, but there are many accessories you can add for more personality and style. For example, our designers love to place table top decorations that match the trees theme right onto the tree branches. Important note- If you are mixing sizes of ornaments and using a lot of tiny, small, medium, large, and huge ornaments, these numbers will go up or down based on the sizes of ornament.

For the first 8 feet of a Christmas tree, each foot needs at least 12 medium/standard sized ornaments per foot totaling:

For 9 and 10 ft. trees you need to add 18 ornaments for each of the bottom feet
