What Season Does Ghost Die In Power

As a reminder, in what creator Courtney Kemp described to EW as the “saddest ending of a television show ever,” Ghost (Hardwick) was shot by his son Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) and died in the arms of his lifelong best friend Tommy (Joseph Sikora).

For Hardwick, who is now starring in the new horror thriller Spell, his original vision was seven seasons as opposed to the six the Starz series ran and a slight alteration to what came to be.

“Between season 1 and season 2, Im just now putting on the coat of Ghost, Im trying to learn who this guy is and to get comfy with him,” he tells EW. “Im jogging in Boston, and it comes to me as how it should end. Just creatively I shared it with [Kemp]. I emailed it in case she uses it and I at least have credit. What I email her was that its season 7 and Ghost, like Denzel [Washington] in Man on Fire, an eye for an eye, a life for a life, he has to go help his brother, Tommy. Tommy does what he shouldnt do and Ghost has to give his life. I share with her, she likes it. I shared it with Joe, hes a big brain, a hell of a writer, and he excitingly goes, “Oh man, lets take it a whole nother level. And we create Romeo and Romeo. So when Ghost dies, Tommy cant live without Ghost and Tommy takes his life and he falls on top of the body of Ghost. Thats what I thought should happen.”

While the actual finale found Tommy distraught over Ghosts death, he didnt meet the same fate, instead opting to leave New York behind and head to Los Angeles for a fresh start. The fan-favorite is now set to be featured in Power Book IV: Force.

There may not be a more passionate fan base than Power viewers, who, for better or worse, have never been shy with their opinions, and the reactions to the divisive finale reached Kemp.

“50 [Cent] said to me, People arent going to like it because its over,” she previously told EW of a conversation with her executive producer. “There were a lot of people that would have preferred that Ghost get a happy ending and rode off triumphant into the sunset. I just felt uncomfortable with having had a character do so many horrible things and being so unrepentant and not having him get punished for it.”

Ghost may be dead, but the legacy of the character and Hardwick live on in the first of four planned spinoffs, Power Book II: Ghost, which follows Tariq in the immediate aftermath of that tragic ending. And the recent premiere of Ghost has finally meant that Hardwick is confronted with reflecting back on the experience.

“I wasnt forced to have to prior, but youve got so many fans upset, youve got so many fans who decide to not tell me how upset they are,” he admits. “And of course, they are doing that in a protective, loving way; they are defending me, wanting me to still be on. But you have some mature fans who think it was time for O to move on and just want to talk about the legacy that O built at Power as opposed to him no longer being there. But Im happy for all of those guys, I hope they keep rocking. Its such a humbling thing for me to know I aided in that legacy starting and seeing whats come of it.”

Still, when it came down to it, fans were stunned by Ghost’s death in season 6. However, Power Universe creator Courtney Kemp said there was no other way for the series to come to an end.

In the final episode Tasha visits Raina’s grave to find Ghost there. Ghost tells Tasha that he will take Tariq and Yaz away from her to live with him and his new girlfriend, Ramona, if she doesn’t stop pushing drugs. When Ghost violently attacked Tasha in episode 9, he also told her that he knew she killed her best friend (and Tommy’s girlfriend) LaKeisha for fearing that LaKeisha was about to turn the whole gang in. Ghost uses that fact as leverage for getting what he wants from Tasha.

He is spotted exiting the club at the back by NYPD detective Blanca Rodriguez (who is working on putting Ghost behind bars for the murder of his own lawyer, Terry Silver). Dre punches her and makes his escape in his car with his family. The cocky character thinks he’s got away with everything until he is arrested at a gas station. After he is locked up again – this time on suspicion of shooting St. Patrick – Spanky and 2-Bit (two drug-dealers working under Tommy Egan, who is Ghost’s former best friend and business partner) set about making good on their agreement made with Ghost before he died to kill Dre inside prison. Spanky and 2-Bit set Dre’s solitary confinement prison cell on fire while he’s inside.

In the end Tasha and Tariq try to pin Ghost’s murder on Dre before Tasha discovers that he has been killed in prison. This puts a spanner in the works and Tasha has to think fast how to blame someone else. She decides to frame Quinton by planting a gun back at his apartment. He is arrested one night with her besides him in bed. The feds soon discover, however, that he was recorded on CCTV buying a Red Bull at a diner at the time of Ghost’s death. Tasha is instead arrested.

Tasha assures Quinton, who suspects Ghost was the one who physically hurt her, that he doesn’t need to protect her. “I can handle him on my own,” Tasha insists to him.

Tate and Ghost absolutely hate each other. They’re two black men vying for spots in New York’s very white political world, both acutely aware of each other’s underhand exercises and chequered pasts. Ghost has dirt on former cop Tate about embezzlement, which he uses as a threat to derail Tate’s gubernatorial campaign. Tate has dirt on Ghost about his corner boy past – not to mention his suspicions that Ghost previously used Truth to launder drug money before becoming a ‘legitimate’ businessman.

While Tariq initially manages to frame Detective Danilo Ramirez (Shalim Ortiz) for the killing, he is eventually caught when a new investigation starts looking into students dealing on campus.

But on one condition: only in the event that police arrested him for homicide. In the posthumous message, Ghost makes fun of his son for being in prison, saying its where Tariq deserves to be.

Will Hardwick make an actual appearance in the spin-off? Rainey Jr seems to think this may be a possibility.

He gets arrested in episode five of the second season, which aired on Sunday. While at police headquarters, Tariq gets a visit from one of his fathers old friends who gave him a letter that Ghost had told him to give to Tariq.

After killing his father Ghost (Omari Hardwick), protagonist Tariq St Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr) is following in his footsteps to become a powerful drug dealer.
