What Size Harp For Lamp

Select a harp that’s at least 2 inches shorter than the height of your lampshade. If you would like a more dramatic look for your lamp, allow your lampshade to cover a portion of your lamp’s base by choosing a harp that’s 4-8 inches shorter than the height of your lampshade.

Refurbish vintage table lamps with authentic parts for professional results. Table lamps are a common type lamp used in many areas in a home. These lamps are produced in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and materials. Most use a lamp harp to support the lamp shade. These lamps, which have a harp or 3/8″ diameter shade holder, use

  • Top: represents diameter across top of shade
  • Bottom: represents diameter across base of shade
  • Side: represents a straight measurement of the slant-side of shade
  • Height of Lamp Shade: approximately 2/3 rds height of lamp-base. (height of lamp base: distance from bottom of lamp base to base of lamp socket)
  • Bottom-diameter of Lamp Shade: approximately 1”-2” less than lamp-base height. Bottom diameter should not exceed lamp-base height.
  • These generalizations apply to many lamps however personal taste should be the guiding influence.

  • Lamp shade proportions should reflect lamp base proportions. For example: a short squat lamp will look best with a shade of similar proportions.
  • Using the same lamp shade base shape, round or square, provides a cohesive appearance.
  • If using incandescent light bulbs there should be a minimum of 3-1/2” between lamp shade and bulb to allow heat escape.
  • If the preferred lampshade size is not available, it is normally best to choose a slightly larger rather than smaller size shade.
  • Change harp height if the lampshade is sitting too high or low on the lamp.
  • When looking for a new lampshade an exact match size may not be available. It is often possible to correctly use a shade that is slightly taller or shorter. To solve this issue change the harp, which holds the lamp shade. Harps are most often 2 part which enables the height portion of the harp to be easily switched. Choose a larger size harp if the shade needs to be raised up or a smaller harp if the shade needs to be lowered.

It is normally best to choose a slightly larger than smaller size shade when trying to select a shade that does not match your requirements exactly.

    Choosing The Right Lampshade

Your lamp and its shade should match perfectly. If not, your lamp will not fully work for its purpose and will surely look awkward. To get the appropriate shade for your lamp, take time to measure your lamp harp and lamp base.

Lamp harps are components to which the lampstand is attached—at the same time, protecting the bulb. A lamp harp has two parts: a saddle and the harp itself. The saddle is fastened under the lamp socket. Meanwhile, the harp is the lightweight oval-shaped or U-shaped frame attached to the saddle at the lower end, extending upwards and around the bulb. Why is a lamp harp measurement important? The height of the shade that you should buy for your new lamp is relative to the height of your lamp harp. To measure lamp harp sizes, take a measuring tape or a ruler. Then, note how many inches it runs from the topmost part of the harp to the socket cap. Generally, the height of the lampshade should not exceed the measurement of the harp plus ½ inch, and should not be smaller than the lamp harp’s height minus ½ inch. For example, a lamp with a harp that is eight inches tall should have a lampshade whose height ranges from 8 ½ to 7 ½ inches.

We learned that to the height of a lamp shade, harp sizes are key. The lampshade’s bottom diameter, on the other hand, is relative to the measurement of the lamp’s height from the bottom of the base to the top of the lamp stem. You can use a measuring tape or ruler for this. Let us refer to this measurement as you lamp’s height. As a general rule, the lampshade’s diameter should be within two inches, plus or minus, the height of your lamp. For example, if your lamp is 16 inches tall, you should select a lampshade with diameter within the 14 to 18 inch-range.

    – I have a glass shade on my table lamp. Can I change from a glass shade to a fabric shade?

If you have a lamp with a #1 or a #2 or a #3 size brass collar, you can convert your lamp from fitting a glass shade to fitting a fabric shade using our adapters. First remove your lamp’s burner by gently screwing the burner counterclockwise until it comes off the collar.

Next measure the inside diameter of the collar. If it measures 7/8” inside diameter, you should have a #1 size collar. If it measures 1 3/ 16” inside diameter, you should have a #2 size collar. If it measures 1 ¾” inside diameter you should have a #3 size collar. All lamps with other size collar diameters cannot be converted to holding fabric shades by using adapters. If you have a #1 size collar (7/8” inside diameter) see adapters #30343, 30344, and 30345. If you have a #2 size collar (1 3/16” inside diameter) or a #3 size collar (1 ¾” inside diameter) see adapters #30346, 30347, and 30348.

Our electrified adapters come with a 9” length harp mounted for a fabric shade. They will screw into your lamp’s collar and allow you to mount a washer fitter fabric shade onto the top of the harp. (Please see information provided in “Frequently asked questions” for selecting a harp size (length) for your shade if you need a size other than 9” long.) For a #3 collar you will need to also order a #3 to #2 reducer to screw into your lamp’s #3 collar and the adapter’s #2 male collar.

    FAQ

How do you measure for a lamp harp replacement?

Harps are available in either regular or heavy duty weights. Our regular harps, which are available with either nickel or brass-plating, range in size from 4” to 15”, while our heavy duty harps, which are also available in nickel and brass plating, come in sizes from 7” and 15”.

What is a standard size harp?

The shade should be twice as wide as the lamp base, and one third of the total height of the lamp. So for a 6-inch lamp base, the shade should be at least 12 inches wide. And if the total height of the lamp (including the bulb and harp) is 24 inches, the shade should be 8 inches tall.
