A big update to this guide happened on 5/23/2022 and 5/25/2022, so with this big change, I happily announce the new version which includes a great deal more varieties. I’d also like to add that in many reports including personal experience, the tolerance to the heat of Buldak rises significantly; so you eat it today and it’s almost too hard to finish? Try it again tomorrow – you will be surprised most likely that it is easier to handle.
One variety that has captivated the world is Samyang Foods Buldak Bokkeummyun. The ‘Fire Noodle Challenge’ is something of legend; people will try to eat a bowl of the spicy noodles as fast as they can and then (usually in a YouTube video), the reaction to the heat is seen, ranging from silence to screaming, calmness to dripping sweat.
The viral mania of this challenge has finally prompted me to release a special series on the varieties and some info on them you might not know. I have included a boatload of information in this post – check out the video as well as all the information below it!
This is a presentation I’ve made including lots of informational as well as me taking down a bowl of the 2x Spicy noodles.
Of all the flavors, Buldak Ramen 2x Spicy Hot Chicken Flavor is the spiciest flavor with a
of 10,000 SHU and the Jjajang Hot Chicken Flavor is the least spicy with a scoville rating of 1,920 SHU.
What are the spiciest instant noodles in the world?
The spiciest noodles in the world clock in at 1,000,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). MAMEE’s Daebak Ghost Pepper Spicy Chicken Noodles are the planet’s hottest instant noodles. Malaysia’s nuclear noodles even have a Scoville Heat Unit scale printed on the cup to warn others of the spice level.
If you are brave enough to try the world’s hottest instant ramen, these noodles really pack a punch.
Warning: not for the faint of heart, even for seasoned heat seekers. Start with a quarter of the powder packet, taste it, and add more as needed.
It claims to be the spiciest ramen on earth.
The noodles are excellent quality, chewy without feeling over cooked or thin like Top Ramen.
Excellent with a soft boiled egg, or egg scrambled in the broth.
Samyang has created their hottest spiciest ramen ever with this limited edition 3x spicy Chicken Ramen Noodles.
What makes Samyang noodles so spicy?
Samyang spicy noodles come with a dried seasoning packet, and a sauce packet.
The dark red liquid stir-fry sauce contains all the “nuclear” flavors that spice up the noodles.
This ramen was made YouTube famous for its extremely challenging level of spiciness.
The renewed Haek Buldak Spicy Chicken Ramen, also known as 2X Fire Noodle clocks in at 10,000 Scoville heat units — making it one of the spiciest ramen in the world.
The original Samyang 2x Spicy Noodles’ Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) was at 8,808.
The burning sensation lingers the next day.
This is the perfect red peppery bowl of instant noodles packing that traditional South Korean spice.
Addictive Teumsae Ramyeon instant noodles come in at 9,413 SHU. These noodles will make you sweat.
These noodles will challenge even the staunchest of spicy fans.
It’s not much of a stretch for me to assume you’ve seen the 2019 Best Picture winner Parasite by now. the noodle dish featured there is “Jjapaguri” (made in response to a request for Ram-Don) or a combination of Chapaghetti and Neoguri. Chapaghetti in this scenario is a black bean noodle or Jjajangmeyon. So really what Ram-Don is in the context of the subtitles is black bean noodles mixed with seafood noodles.
I mentioned Parasite at all to declare that I like this version of jjajangmyeon more then Chapaghetti though Nongshim (makers of both noodles used in Parasite) is more internationally known compared to Samyang. A lot of Samyang products can be discarded as “stunt” food, or spicy for the hell of it. Their Jjajangmeyon is quality and a better instant sauce (at least to me).
I should point out that the majority of buldak noddles are prepared “dry” meaning they don’t have a lot of sauce. Frequently the noodles are boiled then returned to the pan to stirfry for a bit in the sauce. You can certainly attempt that with this and many of the other flavors but it won’t bring life to the freeze dried potato shavings or this cloying sauce.
Of the types of Buldak products available in the US, I’ve never had these “Ice Type” noodles. I can’t see a reference to them on Samyang’s website and suspect they’ve probably been discontinued. The gimmick here is that they were served cold, kind of like japchae only still made with instant ramen fried noodles.
I do think this flavor is as popular as it is now because it delivers on the nearly dangerous spice level depicted on the package. I do, however, question the validity of the Scoville scale rating. Supposedly there is a Korea-only version that reaches 10,000 SHU and I’m curious to try them. Even then, that doesn’t reach the level of habanero pepper.

Daebak Noodles‘ Ghost Pepper Spicy Chicken instant noodle has been dubbed (by themselves) as the spiciest instant noodles in Malaysia. And we’re not doubting it. Rumours have it that this noodle is a lot spicier than Samyang spicy noodle. The Samyang Chicken Flavoured Ramen noodles, which was already considered to be really spicy, stands at a mere 8,706 Scovilles unit (spiciness level), while the Ghost Pepper Noodles hits above 1,041,427 Scovilles unit. THAT’S 100 TIMES SPICIER! The noodles have terrified audiences all around the world, including us. So, for those daredevils out there who thinks that Samyang Noodles has no kick, you can try it!
