Bruno Mars has called on the Recording Academy to allow his new band to perform at Sunday’s (15 March) Grammy Awards.
The duo released their first single “Leave the Door Open” on Friday (5 March).
However, Silk Sonic are now lobbying the Grammys to let them perform alongside the likes of BTS, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles at the forthcoming award ceremony.
In a post shared by Mars on Sunday (7 March), he wrote that the pair would happily audition if it meant they could take part.
“Dear Grammys, If you can see it in your hearts to allow two out of work musicians to perform at your show, we would really appreciate it,” Mars wrote. “We just released a song and could really use the promotion right now.”
Adding that the duo had “a lot riding” on the song’s success, he continued: “We haven’t been able to perform for a while and we just want to sing. We’ll send in an audition tape and take as many covid tests as we need to.
“I promise we won’t be extra. We just really want to gig again.”
It’s been nearly five years since Mars’s last album, 24K Magic, was released in November 2016. It won seven awards at the 2018 Grammys, including Album of the Year.
Paak’s fourth studio album, titled Ventura, was released in 2019.
The Recording Academy are yet to respond to Mars’s request.
Besides starting his Las Vegas residency, working on a new album, and partnering with Disney, Bruno Mars also collaborated with artist Chic in 2018, joined forces with Cardi B in February 2019 and released “Please Me,” and worked with Ed Sheeran on the song “Blow” which came out in July of the same year.
His rep stated that, “The people at MGM have given Bruno Mars the rare opportunity to be able to continuously gig while hes in the creative process of working on his next album,” which explains why the singer wanted to give back. The rep added, “With the closures across Las Vegas, Bruno wanted to show his appreciation to the amazing employees because they help make these shows possible.”
Not only is Bruno Mars working on a new album and is scheduled to return to Park MGM once its safe to hold concerts again, but hes also going to star in and produce a Disney musical featuring his own original songs, according to Variety. While not much is known about the project, Brunos involvement with the Disney film was announced back in February. Its unclear at this time whether the coronavirus has impacted production, but since we dont have a release day anyway, its safe to assume things are (hopefully) on track.
The singer started his Vegas residency in 2016 and went on the 24k Magic World Tour which ended in December 2018. Where is he now?
It might feel like we havent heard from R&B and funk singer Bruno Mars (also known as Peter Gene Hernandez), but the music icon has been hard at work on new music and new projects. Bruno Mars, who gained popularity in 2010 for tracks like “Nothin on You,” “Billionaire,” and Just the Way You Are.” Brunos last album to come out was 24k Magic in 2016, which won Album, Record, and Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards. It also gave us “Uptown Funk,” which to this day is still catchy as heck. Article continues below advertisement
