“Hi, my name is Catherine Zhang!”

I’m a 21 year old Australian born Chinese running towards a future filled with desserts and pastry. I hope this space can provide you with the recipes, tips and ideas to bring you the happiness desserts bring me!

In 2019, myself, as well as 9 other dessert makers entered Zumbo’s dessert factory to battle it out for the “Zumbo’s Just Desserts” champion title. I was challenged and my skills were tested amongst peers of equal and greater talent. However, it was in this environment I grew and found greater certainty of my future in the area of pastry.

After emerging successful I’m heading straight in that direction, follow me in the next big stage of my life!

After finishing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Food and Nutrition Science at the University of Sydney I am free to explore my future, and all I want to do is make desserts!

Hi, Im Catherine!

My name is Catherine, a food blogger and dessert lover. If I look familiar you may have seen me on NETFLIXs Zumbo’s Just Desserts S2!

As an Australian-Chinese pastry chef and recipe developer I share recipes and tips on desserts inspired by amazing flavours, fresh produce and of course my Asian background.

I’m starting this blog because I want to be able to inspire those that were like me, who aren’t 100% sure of their dream, but at the same time aren’t satisfied with their current job or upcoming future (in my case sitting in a science lab…). I want to be able to give insight into what I am doing to follow my dream, how I’m approaching different opportunities as well as sharing the desserts and recipes I develop along the way.

It was one of the most challenging, unique and memorable experiences of my life so far, as well as being the most eye opening. It was through ZJDs that I confirmed my passion for baking and making desserts. I was always worried that if I was to move away from studying, and pushed for a career in hospitality, my love for desserts would die out. This was coupled with my family’s disapproval towards a future in a commercial kitchen (highly hypocritical of my mum I must say, since she was the one that told me to enter ZJDs in the first place… ). But, after pushing through 1 and a half months of dessert making, technique perfecting and recipe testing from early in the morning to… early the next morning… I really discovered how much my love for baking could push me.

Hi! I’m Catherine Zhang, a 20 year old aspiring pastry chef and recent contestant on season 2 of Zumbo’s Just Desserts (ZJDs). After a years wait, the second season of ZJDs finally finished airing in Australia on Channel 7, and is going to be released worldwide on Netflix from January the 10th 2020!

I stumbled upon the casting for ZJDs by chance at the 2019 Sweets Expo in Sydney, and my mum was the one that pushed me to apply. To be completely honest, I didn’t think my skills were anywhere near refined enough to apply, but after A LOT, of nagging from my family I applied…. and look where I am now.

I’m in no way perfect. Every time I recreate a recipe I make mistakes, whether that be a sinking cake, an underset panna cotta or a curdled cream, but each time I learn from them, get more knowledge and don’t make the same mistakes again! I want to be able to share the small mistakes I make so that everyone following me doesn’t do the same.
