The contemporary game of darts can be traced back to the French. The game eventually found its way to the United Kingdom via a funfair, where people could gamble on their ability to throw multiple darts as accurately as possible at a wooden target.
The modern dartboard consists of multiple segments with assigned numerical values. The objective is to score below or over a certain number. Missing the board completely or causing the dart to bounce off of the board would result in a score of zero.
Today, there are multiple types of dartboards with numerous sets of rules. However, as a competitive sport, the Darts Regulation Authority (DRA), a non-profit organization that ensures good governance and integrity in darts, has set a standard size and ruleset to govern how the game is played on the international stage.
If you don’t have all day to sit around and read about the dimensions of a dartboard, allow me to give you a quick summary.
According to the DRA, a bristle dartboard must measure precisely 17.76 inches (451 millimeters) in diameter.
There are at least ten dartboard varieties to choose from. The most commonly used dartboard for competitive play is known as the Old London Dartboard or Clock Dartboard. You can instantly recognize it by the treble and double rings, as well as the double-bullseye market at the center.
While dartboards vary in numbering styles and appearance, they all follow the same size standards set by the DRA. Every dartboard used for competitive play must measure 17.76 inches (451 millimeters) across and 1.5 inches (38.1 millimeters) in depth.
Even though some organizers may promote their games as using 18-inch-wide (457 millimeters), they still use the same precise dartboard standards set by the DRA.
The typical dartboard used in competitions is separated into 20 different segments as denoted by the numbers just outside of the outer-most ring, known as the double ring. The distance from the center of the dartboard to the outside of the double ring is 6.69 inches (170 millimeters).
As for the triple ring—the ring between the double ring and the center—it measures 4.21 inches (107 millimeters) from the center of the dartboard. The widths of the double and triple rings are 0.315 inches (8 millimeters).
At the center are two circles of different colors. The larger circle measures 1.26 inches (32 millimeters) in diameter, and the smaller center, known as the bull, measures 0.5 inches (12.7 millimeters) across.
When setting up a dartboard for competitive play, the organizer must ensure that the number 20 is at the top of the board. The dartboard should be securely fastened to the wall so as to prevent it from moving as darts hit the board and players remove their darts from the board.
The bull must be exactly 5 feet 8.11 inches (1.73 meters) from the ground. The player’s frontmost toe must be exactly 7 feet 9.31 inches (2.37 meters) away from the dartboard before throwing their darts.
Distance for women
Women players don’t need any other setup measurements. The setup for ladies and throwing distance remains the same for women’s darts as well.
No matter how you hung your dart board (on a wall or on a mobile stand), keep 3m – 9.8′ distance from board measures bull to bull.
One thing to be aware of is that more expensive bristle boards have thinner dividing rings between the beds of the dartboard…. but the dartboard stays the same size. This means there are larger beds on a more expensive board with blade dividers (such as a Nodor or a Winmau) than there are on a traditional board with wire dividers. It also means that bounce-outs are less likely to occur, because the divider or spider area is smaller and lower profile.
Originally the spider was made from wires tied into the bristle board. On newer boards they can be triangular wires to help reduce bounce-outs. The newest technology are thin metal blades cut into the bristle board. These blades provide the smallest divider size, the most target-able area, and the least bounce-outs. The only downside is that board life is be reduced by all the fibers being cut into segments, instead of being in one massive block of fibers.
In darts, the name isnt so grand; its The Throwing Area. However, darts does have a cool name … the Oche, which rhymes with Hockey. Thats the name of the line. In pro tournaments it is done by placing a board on the floor at the limit of the throwing area, so you always can feel and know where the line is. In ordinary situations it is just a sticker on the floor, which the front of your foot cant be forward of its front edge.
In written nomenclature you will often see prefixes of S for Single, D for Double and T for Trips/Triples when describing the segment to aim for. T20 == 60 points, etc. If you see a 25 or 50 it is a reference to a Bullseye, and D25 would be a Double Bull.
Another important consideration in an electronic board is the size of the spider, the area that exists between each bed of the dartboard. The spider is non-scoring and will cause bounce-outs. Unlike the spider on a steel-tip board, and the various darts that prevent bounce-outs — there is so solution for that on an soft-tip board 🙁
