Do You Have To Kill Asgore

Asgore and Flowey are among the final boss fights of Undertale, coming after youve explored The Core.

The following boss is designed to be played as part of a complete Pacifist guide – in short, going through the entire game without killing anything to unlock a different ending – of which bosses are some of the hardest to beat.

If youre playing a Genocide run, however, youll be fighting someone different in the final encounter – the prior link explains who. But whichever way youre playing, our wider Undertale walkthrough delves into other areas of the game.

As the battle begins, Asgore will destroy your Mercy button. This time you have no choice but to fight to the bitter end!

His attacks are very similar to Toriels but they do significantly more damage, but you can eat your Butterscotch Pie and Talk to him three times to lower his AT and DEF to even the odds a little if you need to.

The longer the fight goes on the more damage youll do to him with each hit, and he will eventually concede defeat.

Choose to spare him, and Flowey will make an appearance. At the end of his rant the game will crash (at least, on PC) and when you reload it your save file will be “corrupted” – dont panic, its meant to happen! Just pick Continue, and prepare for an epic battle…

This fight is very different to any youve faced before. Theres no box constraining you, the fight isnt turn-based, and to start with you have no buttons along the bottom of the screen; the Fight button will show up occasionally, and you need to hit it quickly when it appears.

Floweys attacks cycle between an all out assault and a short battle against one of the six Souls. Dying at any point will cause the game to quit, but at the end of each cycle youll hit a checkpoint so if you die you can at least resume the battle where you left off.

During his all out phase the most important thing to do is keep moving – as long as you dont stop you wont die, youll just get taken down to 1HP.

At a random point during this phase an Act button will move across the screen that you must activate – hitting it will turn his attacks into healing items which should get you back to full health, but failing to do so will get you killed pretty quickly.

Once all six souls have been dealt with Floweys DEF will drop to zero and your HP will be fully restored.

Hell fall back on his all out attacks but the souls will continue to throw out healing items, so providing you hit the Fight button every time it appears the fight should be over fairly quickly from here.

The game will come to a conclusion at this point, but if you managed to not kill any monsters and befriended Papyrus and Undyne as part of a Pacifist playthrough, theres more to come. Reload the game and head to the Laboratory to see even more.

The only way to stop his attacks is to defeat him first. Keep using the “FIGHT” command to whittle away Asgore’s health, and heal up when needed. It can be a long and tense fight, but players should stay determined and keep learning his attack patterns until the end.

Asgore forces the protagonist to fight him, and the protagonist cannot spare Asgore. If any of Asgores attacks hit the protagonist and they do not have enough HP to survive it, the attack drops their HP to 1 when it otherwise would have killed them. However, the next attack that hits the protagonist will kill them. This resembles Toriel refusing to hurt the human if their HP ever drops to 2, instead opting to deliberately miss the protagonist.

During the battle, Asgore uses attack patterns similar to Toriels. He also uses light blue and orange attacks in which the protagonist can see the upcoming attack pattern by looking at Asgores eyes, which flash the attack color pattern. This pattern also plays sound clips, the 2-4 warnings ending with a lower pitched noise than previous. His attack patterns usually fill the screen, like a Curtain Fire (da-n ma- ku-) genre game.

Check, Talk On the Neutral Route before the fight begins, Asgore destroys the MERCY button. He attacks mainly with fireballs and his trident.

Talk to Toriel and follow her into the basement. She will try to protect you by preventing you from leaving; this is the first boss battle of the game.

The first key to find is the Red Key, and is located to the west. Check the sinks until the Memoryhead trio appears. These guys are pretty tricky to defeat; you must use Cell and then Refuse to unlock the Spare option. They will drop the Red Key after the battle; the lock is in the same area.

The first step here is to go have a bite to eat with sans. After a nice chat over a meal you are free to explore the area on your own.

Head east into a room of beds. You are able to sleep in the first one if you wish. The Yellow Key is in the bed that looks different from the rest. Head north for the next key.

Once in the next section, head east to a hallway with a block of fans and hit the switch. A crazy dog-monster named Endogeny will appear, and it takes some work to win this fight. Beckon, Pet, Play, Pet, and Pet are the actions needed to open the Spare option. Be weary of the homing attacks! After this monster is defeated, head west and find the shower stall with the Green Key inside.
