Restor A Finish On Hardwood Floors

When I saw this post on an Easy Fix for Scratched Hardwood Floors, I knew I had to try it. Our floors in our rental are very scratched up and I’ve been on a mission ever since we moved to figure out ways to improve how they look.

I chose a spot that was pretty bad but also in a fairly inconspicuous place. See above for the scratches before I tried Restor-a-Finish on them.

And here is how they look after using Restor-a-Finish on them. I can’t tell that much of a difference up close, but I think it looks somewhat better from a distance.

I think this would work even better on wood with darker finish. I also would recommend starting out pouring on less of the Restor-a-Finish to make sure you’re happy with the results in a small area before you dump a bunch on a larger area.

What can I use to bring the shine back to my hardwood floors?

To clean your hardwood floor, combine equal parts vegetable oil and white vinegar in a spray bottle and shake well. Cleaning with vinegar is a no-brainer because it’s a natural polish. Dirt and grime can be dislodged thanks to its acidic nature.

Then use a paper towel to rub it into the floor, paying special attention to working it into the scratched areas.

To really show you the difference I took photos in the study, where there are deep gouges in the floor in one corner. I mean, deep. Something very heavy and very sharp must have been dragged very roughly across the floor here. I can only speculate.

The scratches are still visible, but SO much less so than before. And when you use the Restor-a-Finish on smaller scratched areas, the scratches practically vanish.

First you puddle a bit of the Restor-a-Finish on the floor on top of the scratched area. You should choose a color close to the shade of your floors – I used Walnut.

What Howard Restor-a-Finish is NOT is a full house refinishing system. It is great for spot touch ups as a temporary fix. I’ve used it on small surface scratches throughout the house and the results have been pretty spectacular.
